40,000 Romanians Expected to Strike on Monday

Some 40,000 public servants from local public administration will launch a general strike on Monday in protest at the government's decision to cut salaries and jobs in the public sector.

Local workers, clerks, and public finance clerks will also join the protest of other unionists, in June, as the parliament debates wage and pension cuts as agreed under a €20 billion IMF-led aid deal.

Unions hope a million Romanians will support the strike, which aims to put pressure on policymakers to soften the announced austerity measures.

Starting from June 1, state sector wages will be cut by 25 per cent and all salaries, including the minimum wage, will be affected. Jobless benefits and pensions will be cut by 15 per cent.

Recession-hit Romania, which is relying on a €20 billion IMF-led loan, has pledged drastic public spending cuts to rein in its deficit, which this year stands at 6.8 per cent, and restart its economy, which continued to contract in the first quarter.
